As water professionals in drought-stricken California, building trust with all of our stakeholders –agriculture, businesses, citizens, government, institutions, nonprofit organizations, and the public at large– is the first step in moving everyone into shared action. It all starts with our conversations—those inward voices that we often listen to first, then those around us including those on our team, those we work for, and our stakeholders.
Conversations are not what we think they are. We think they are about talking, sharing information, telling people what to do, or telling others what’s on our mind. We now know through cognitive and neurological research, that a conversation goes deeper and is more robust that traditional information sharing.
